History
In the year 1874, a group of Danish immigrants met to establish a new Lutheran congregation. They named it the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pine River.
In 1880, the decision was made to move the church to Poy Sippi and build a new building. In 1902 a steeple was added which is now the Steeple Memorial.
In 1940 the church changed its name to First English Lutheran and in 1954 to First Lutheran.
In 1955 a new church was built and the old building was incorporated into the new one as the fellowship hall.
The congregation was originally affiliated with the United Evangelical Lutheran Church, then the American Lutheran Church, and now the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).
First Lutheran was a two-point parish with St. John’s of Saxeville for many years. After a period of being a single parish, we have now joined Grace Lutheran in Berlin as a two-point parish.
August 10, 2025 we celebrated our 150th anniversary!
